Cape May is recognized as one of North America’s premier birding destinations. Located at the southern tip of the state, this coastal town is perfectly situated along the Atlantic Flyway, making it a vital stopover point for thousands of migrating birds throughout the year. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or curious beginner, Cape May offers exceptional opportunities to observe a wide range of species—especially during its seasonal festivals and events.
Cape May Fall Birding Festival (October)
The Cape May Fall Birding Festival, hosted by New Jersey Audubon, is the flagship event. Typically held in late October, this long-standing festival is the oldest of its kind in the U.S. It coincides with peak fall migration and features a diverse lineup: guided field trips, keynote speakers, vendor exhibits, and exclusive access to prime birding locations. Birders can expect to see hawks, falcons, warblers, sparrows, shorebirds, and seabirds in large numbers.
Spring Festival (May)
The Spring Festival celebrates northbound migration as birds return to breeding grounds. Held in mid-to-late May, this event provides birders the chance to witness brilliantly colored warblers, vireos, and flycatchers. Activities include morning walks, photography sessions, and expert-led talks focused on identification, ecology, and conservation.
Summer Birding (June–August)
Though migration slows in summer, Cape May still offers quality birding. The summer consists of weekly walks, family-friendly outings, and educational talks. Highlights include breeding populations of ospreys, herons, and beach-nesting birds like piping plovers and least terns.
Winter Birding (January/February)
The winter is ideal for those interested in cold-weather species. Participants often encounter sea ducks, loons, gulls, and raptors like bald eagles and snowy owls. While fewer species are present, winter birding allows for a quieter, more focused experience.
