The Cape May Promenade delivers ocean views, beach access, snacks, shops, and famous landmarks in one exciting waterfront walk. Stretching roughly two miles beside Beach Avenue, it leads from Cape May’s quieter eastern beaches to the sweeping shoreline at The Cove. Lace up your walking shoes and explore it mile by mile!
Mile One: Begin Near Poverty Beach
Start near Wilmington Avenue and Poverty Beach, where the atmosphere feels peaceful and residential. This eastern section is ideal for an early-morning stroll, with beautiful dunes, oceanfront hotels, and fewer commercial distractions.
Beach entrances appear where streets such as Wilmington, Trenton, Philadelphia, Reading, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Brooklyn meet Beach Avenue. Seasonal public restrooms are available near Wilmington and Trenton Avenues. Check Cape May’s official public restroom locations before setting out.
This stretch is perfect for sunrise photography, peaceful family walks, and beachgoers who prefer a quieter entrance to the sand.
Central Promenade: Food, Shops, and Convention Hall
As you continue west, the promenade becomes livelier. Benches offer convenient places to pause, while access ramps help visitors reach the walkway and beach.
Soon, you will arrive at Cape May Convention Hall, one of the beachfront’s most recognizable landmarks. The oceanfront venue hosts concerts, movies, family programs, and seasonal events. Public restrooms are available nearby at Gurney Street.
This central stretch is also a great place to stop for pizza, ice cream, candy, coffee, cold drinks, and casual meals. Small beach shops and arcades add even more excitement to the walk.
Western Promenade: Beaches and Downtown Detours
Continue past popular beach entrances near Jackson, Perry, Grant, and Broadway. Seasonal restrooms near Grant Street make this a practical stopping point for families.
From here, walk a few blocks inland to the Washington Street Mall. This pedestrian shopping district features boutiques, restaurants, cafés, dessert shops, and inviting outdoor spaces. Browse its shopping directory or explore nearby food and drink options.
Finish at The Cove
The promenade ends at The Cove, a broad beach known for surfing, dramatic coastal scenery, and spectacular sunsets. The covered Sunset Pavilion offers benches, shade, and impressive views of the ocean and Cape May Lighthouse.
Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. From quiet dunes to lively oceanfront attractions, the Cape May Promenade transforms a simple walk into a complete seaside adventure.
