Where to Watch the Sunrise in Cape May

A Cape May sunrise is worth setting the alarm for. Before the promenade fills with walkers and the beach chairs come out, the shoreline feels peaceful, cool, and almost private. For the best experience, arrive 20 to 30 minutes before sunrise so you can watch the sky change from deep blue to pink, orange, and gold.

Poverty Beach: Best for a Quiet Sunrise

For a calm, less commercial setting, head toward Poverty Beach at Cape May’s eastern end. The wide Atlantic horizon makes this one of the best spots for photographers, couples, and anyone who wants a peaceful start to the day.

You can also connect with the Cape May Promenade afterward for an easy morning walk.

Convention Hall: Best for Convenience

The beachfront near Cape May Convention Hall is a great choice if you are staying downtown. You get open ocean views, promenade benches, and easy access to restaurants and shops once the town begins waking up.

This is also one of the simplest sunrise spots for families because you can enjoy the view without committing to a long walk.

The Cove: Best for Dramatic Coastal Scenery

At the western end of Cape May, The Cove offers a broad beach, curving shoreline, surfers, and plenty of room to frame a beautiful sunrise photo. Although this side of town is famous for sunsets farther west along Delaware Bay, The Cove still delivers a striking early-morning Atlantic scene.

Bring binoculars—you may spot shorebirds or dolphins offshore.

Arrive Early and Park Smart

Cape May’s metered parking generally begins at 10 a.m., depending on the zone, which makes sunrise outings especially convenient. Always check the posted signs where you park. You can review current rates and zones on the city’s parking information page.

Bring a light sweater or windbreaker, even in summer. The beachfront can feel noticeably cooler before the sun climbs.

Follow Sunrise With Breakfast

After your Cape May sunrise, reward yourself with breakfast. The Mad Batter on Jackson Street serves breakfast daily beginning at 8 a.m., with everything from waffles to French toast.

For something quicker, Madison’s Bakery on Beach Avenue is a convenient option for coffee, donuts, sticky buns, and pastries.

Stay at the Stockton Inns
