5 Day Trips from Cape May

Cape May has enough activities and attractions to keep you busy, but if you want to explore beyond its shores, there are several easy day trips from Cape May to take before returning home.

The Wildwoods

About 15 minutes from Cape May is the Wildwoods and its boardwalk with amusement parks, Morey’s Piers, and restaurants. Wildwoods is home to four piers with three of the best rollercoasters along the East Coast, waterparks, plus shops and arcades.

The Wildwoods boardwalk is fun for the entire family, and you can watch the free fireworks show every Friday night during the summer.

Historic Cold Spring Village

Learn more about a day in the life of villagers living in South Jersey during the “homespun age” at the open-air living history museum at the Historic Cold Spring Village. Set on more than 30 acres, visitors can explore 27 restored antique buildings, gardens, and the working farm. Ideal for the entire family, visitors can partake in interactive, educational, and hands-on activities.

For the adults, sit back and enjoy a cold one from the onsite brewery, Cold Spring Brewery. Housed inside a restored English-style Cape May country barn, the brewery pours a variety of lagers, IPAs, and porters. They are open Thursdays through Sundays.

Historic Cold Spring Village is located in town but is perfect for spending the entire day there! It is open seasonally, June through September.

Roughly 40 minutes from Cape May, Margate is a small beach-side community home to one of the most popular attractions along the Jersey Shore. People from all over come to see the world’s largest elephant building, the Lucy the Elephant. A National Historic Landmark Lucy is 130+ years old and stands at six stories tall, so she is hard to miss. It’s free to visit, but there is an admission price if you want to take a guided tour through the structure.

Ocean City

Perfect for the entire family, the 40-minute drive to Ocean City is one of our favorite day trips from Cape May. Visitors love strolling along the boardwalk, checking out the beaches, fishing, and surfing. The boardwalk is the hub of Ocean City with wonderful shops, restaurants, surf shops, and the famous Playland’s Castaway Cove amusement park. Enjoy eight miles of coastline, a local state park, shopping at Stainton’s Gallery, and other fun attractions in Ocean City.

Atlantic City

45 minutes from Cape May is another popular destination in New Jersey: Atlantic City! Known for its casinos, shows and fine dining, Atlantic City can be a fun half-day getaway for adults.

If you’re planning on taking the kids, you may want to visit the Atlantic City Aquarium for its educational and fun exhibits. Another family-friendly attraction is the Steel Pier with traditional boardwalk rides, games, and helicopter tours!
