We know just the place if you’re looking for a unique experience in taking in the Cape May views. Nested at the bottom of the peninsula, Cape May Point State Park is a local nature area perfect for hiking, spotting historic landmarks, and other must-do outdoor activities. No matter what time of year, it’s always a great time to explore the 244 acres. Here’s our guide to visiting Cape May Point State Park!
Fishing
Acquire your fishing license and get ready to cast a line! You have a great opportunity to catch flounder, bass, and bluefish right on the sandy beach in the park. Anglers can not only reel in some great trophies but are also rewarded with beautiful views of the coast.
Cape May Lighthouse
Standing at 157 feet tall, the Cape May Lighthouse remains a fully functional landmark in the park. Journey up the almost 200 steps and get a panoramic view of Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Guided tours are available for the 163-year-old historic monument and provide a terrific explanation of its rich history.
Picnicking
Take advantage of the beach weather with a picnic at Cape May Point State Park. Sit out on the large lawn area or right by the lighthouse for a tasty midday snack. You may also reserve a sheltered picnic area for bigger groups as well!
Battery 223
Battery 223 is another unique historic landmark within the park. Located right on the beach, this structure was once a military base and was built in 1942. You cannot enter the emplacement but can view it while walking on the beach. The beach environment has caused it to deteriorate uniquely and stands out greatly from a distance.
Hiking
Three hiking trails are available within Cape May Point State Park. All trails are marked and are surrounded by various habitats such as wetland marshes and beaches. The blue trail is one of our favorites to explore. It’s an easy hike with an array of flora and fauna, especially dunes and beaches where migrating birds like to frequent in the fall.
