Everything You Need to Know About Fall Birding in Cape May

Cape May is known as a great North American hub to see fall migrations for all types of birds. The rural areas of the beach town make a perfect home for all types of bird species to lay claim. Grab your binoculars and experience fall birding in Cape May!

When To Go

As summer comes to a close, the cooler temperatures of autumn bring out the feathered friends of Cape May. Bird migration begins in September, birds are getting ready to head south for the winter and love to make a stop in the marshes and wetlands of the peninsula. September and October are peak times to birdwatch, especially early in the morning.

Where To Find Them

The Cape May Bird Observatory is in The Northwood Center and hosts terrific watch spots to catch sights of migrating birds and watching tours and field trips as well. Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area is another area perfect for birding because it’s directly on the migration path. Both locations offer different types of land and formations, perfect for spotting a great variety of birds.

What to Bring

To really step up to the role as a bird watcher, you’ll need the right tools! Not only do you need to pack up your binoculars, but there are also other must-have supplies for your excursion. We recommend also bringing a quality camera along, you’ll want to snap a shot of the feathered friends you’ll find. A field guide will also help you recognize the specific species in the area, especially if it’s a field guide designated for Cape May. There are also mobile apps that will help you along! A notebook and pen can be beneficial too if you’re looking to avoid pulling out your phone during this tranquil activity. We also recommend dressing for the appropriate weather, sometimes you can be caught under a rain cloud!

What You’ll See

Cape May is home to over 200 types of birds during migration season! Feast your eyes on visiting eagles, hawks, falcons, and smaller birds when birding. The CMBO provides great looks at Ospreys, Peregrine Falcons, and Merlins. Higbee Beach is an area where warblers, vireos, and sparrows frequent.
