There are many ways to enjoy your vacation in Cape May! From a day at the beach to touring the beautiful Victorian homes that line our streets. To help you get started planning your vacation, here are some of our favorite things to do in Cape May.
Visit the Victorian Homes
The iconic details of the Victorian era such as gingerbread trim, turrets, and gables can be seen almost everywhere in the seaside town of Cape May. Home to the highest concentration of Victorian homes (second to San Francisco), Cape May brings in visitors from around the world each year to see these decadent homes.
The best places to start are along Perry St., Jackson St., Ocean St., and Decatur. Northeast of the Washington Street Mall, Hughes Street, and Columbia Street are also great places to spot some of our favorite Victorian houses in Cape May.
Visit a winery or a brewery
Cape May is well known for its stunning beach, Victorian architecture, and amazing food scene but is also a great destination for beer and wine tasting! With Cape May’s coastal location, it offers excellent soil for growing grapes which becomes excellent wine. Sample exceptional vintages and take a tour or two of our local wineries. There are six different wineries to choose from including Cape May Winery and Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery.
While there are only two breweries, Cape May Brewing Company and Tuckahoe Brewing Company, they are a great alternative for those who don’t like wine or want to try both!
Spend a day at the beach
Known as “America’s Original Beach Town,” Cape May is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Stretching 20 miles out to sea, Cape Island (as the town was first named), offers miles of sandy beaches that greet the waters from the Delaware Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. From Higbee Beach to Poverty Beach, and everything in between, life’s a beach in Cape May.
Visit the Emlen Physick Estate
The Emlen Physick Estate, located at 1048 Washington St., once belonged to a prominent family in Cape May’s history: the Physicks. Dr. Emlen Physick with his mother, Frances Ralston, and his aunt Emilie Parmentier moved into the house when it was completed in 1879. The house is said to be designed by architect Frank Furness and is the only one of its kind in Cape May.
Today, the carriage house includes a tearoom and gift shop, the perfect ending spot for the guided tours of the mansion. The tearoom hosts many themed events throughout the year and is another wonderful addition to the museum. The Carriage House Café & Tearoom is open daily from noon to 4 p.m., April through October.
Take a horse and carriage ride
Whether you are on a family vacation or a romantic weekend getaway, carriage rides in Cape May are the perfect outing for your vacation. Galivant through the Victorian city streets as you soak up its history and beauty on your private carriage ride.
The Cape May Carriage Company began tours of the city in 1983. Weather permitting, tours are offered on weekends during the spring and fall, and daily tours in summer and during the Christmas holiday season. Take a historic tour of Cape May with your choice of the standard carriage, the Wagonette (for families and groups) carriage, or the Cinderella carriage.
Tours range in length with 15, 30, and 60-minute tour options. All tours depart from our location at Ocean & Washington Streets, just half a mile from Stockton Inns.
Stay at the Stockton Inns
Of course, one of our favorite things to do in Cape May is a stay at the Stockton Inns. Stay in one of the Victorian houses at the Stockton Manor. As Cape May’s only oceanfront Victorian Inn with a pool, the Stockton Manor is a restored 1876 Victorian guesthouse. Our manor offers the perfect place for couples looking to enjoy a romantic weekend in Cape May.
Many of Stockton Manor’s rooms boast ocean views, and the large two-bedroom suites come with fully outfitted kitchen areas to easily accommodate your next family gathering. Spend a tranquil afternoon watching the ocean from the rocking chairs on the wrap-around porch or seek quiet solitude in the first-floor parlor.
At Stockton Manor, outdoor amenities include a refreshing onsite pool, ocean-view veranda, lounge chairs, and a barbecue grill. Best of all our convenient location places you moments away from numerous attractions that offer fun for everybody.
