Looking for a fresh way to explore Cape May this summer? Hop aboard the Cape May Rail Bike—a fun, family-friendly adventure that takes you through one of New Jersey’s most beautiful and biodiverse landscapes.
Start Your Journey in the Heart of Cape May
Your adventure begins behind the Cape May Welcome Center at 609 Lafayette Street, where you’ll check in and meet the friendly team from Revolution Rail. After a quick orientation and safety overview, you’ll hop onto a comfortable, four-seat rail bike and get ready to pedal down a historic stretch of railroad tracks.
Pedal Alongside the Garrett Family Preserve
The rail bike route takes riders on a 4-mile out-and-back trip that runs alongside The Nature Conservancy’s Garrett Family Preserve. This protected area offers some of the most stunning natural scenery in Cape May, with sweeping views of native wildflower meadows, salt marshes, and coastal flora.
As you pedal along the tracks, expect a leisurely pace that’s great for riders of all ages and fitness levels. The experience is designed to be relaxing and scenic, with plenty of opportunities to take in the peaceful surroundings.
A Wildlife Watcher’s Paradise
Nature lovers, bring your binoculars! The Garrett Family Preserve is a hotspot for wildlife, especially during the summer months. Riders often spot migrating songbirds, raptors, butterflies, and bumblebees—all thriving thanks to the conservation efforts of The Nature Conservancy. Monarch butterflies flutter through the wildflower fields, and osprey nests dot the landscape, creating a truly immersive nature experience.
Make the Most of the Ride
The trip lasts about 90 minutes and includes a scenic turnaround spot perfect for a photo break. Each rail bike is equipped with seatbelts and a canopy for sun protection, and helmets are provided. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, and your camera to capture the views!
